Damien Hirst - Where the Land Meets the Sea

Damien Hirst - Where the Land Meets the Sea

20 July – 18 August 2023

Where the Land Meets the Sea

Where the Land Meets the Sea, on view at Phillips’ London galleries from 20 July to 18 August 2023, is a captivating exhibition featuring works from three series by Damien Hirst. Works from the ‘Coast Paintings’, ‘Sea Paintings’ and ‘Seascapes’ series are exhibited for the first time in this exciting show.

The three series included in Where the Land Meets the Sea draw on Hirst’s lifelong connection to the sea, as well as inspiration from Abstract Expressionism, namely Robert Motherwell’s ‘Beside the Sea’ paintings series from the 1960s. The spontaneity and vigour of action painting employed in ‘Coast Paintings’ and the raw power of the sea frozen in photorealistic greyscale in ‘Sea Paintings’ intertwine in ‘Seascapes’, where tactile layers of splattered paint bring the energy of coastal storms to life. Viewers are invited to walk through the gallery, evoking Hirst’s own pastime of walking along the beach in the winter and observing the sea.

The exhibition coincides with an application-based drop of oil on canvas works from these three series, exclusively on HENI Primary. It is presented by HENI and Phillips, with the support of the artist’s galleries, Gagosian and White Cube.
