The Story of Us & Them

"The Story of Us & Them, an exhibition by Conor Harrington, the Irish-born artist known for his captivating blend of graffiti-style painting, baroque elements, and dreamlike imagery is on view at the HENI Gallery from 14 September to 12 October 2018.

Comprising 12 works in total, with eight large, dominant, full-colour canvases and four smaller black and white studies on birch panel, the contrast between the scale and coloration of these works adds depth to the show. Harrington explores the concept of patriotism and the divisive nature it often breeds. He uses historical portraits of forgotten generals as a starting point, infusing them with patriotic red and blue hues. A unique aspect of the exhibition is Harrington's commission of two flags, one red and one blue, which he reproduces in paint. These flags serve as symbols of fictionalized nation states, allowing him to delve into ideas surrounding tribalism and patriotism.

To create his intricate compositions, Harrington employs various techniques, including fire extinguishers, brushes, squeegees, and hand painting, on large canvases. His distinctive, bold style enlivens the gallery, straddling the line between classical and modern; romantic, yet hard-edged and realistic. This lends a baroque quality to the work that heightens the drama of its political undertones.

Through this insightful exhibition, Harrington sheds light on the current political divisiveness that he sees as prevailing around the world, where people rally around flags representing their chosen political parties, ideologies, or lifestyles. The Story of Us & Them serves as a thought-provoking exploration of these themes, inviting viewers to reflect on the divisions in society today. "
